School Policies

• 110 hours are required to pass each course
• Students can drop courses within 1 week of the start date for a full refund
• Full time students are required to have a credit counseling session with guidance counselors

Student Absences

• If you are going to be absent from a live session, you must phone the school at: 416-825-128

Request Leave

• If you are not well for an extended period of time, please call or email the school.

Technical Requirements

• Students must have access to a broadband/high speed Internet connection, and a personal computer.
• Students will need a USB Headset and a Webcam
• Moodle (Jasper Academy’s LMS) will work in any modern web browser, such Explorer, Firefox and chrome etc.
• Student browser should also have both cookies and JavaScript enabled. These are typically enabled by default.
• Productivity software such as MS Office and Google Docs.

Code of Conduct for Computer Use/Online Behavior

• Maintain secure passwords for all accounts assigned to them
• Take precautions against others obtaining unauthorized access to their computing resources
• Not willingly share passwords and other access control information for their personal accounts to any other person
• Report immediately to a teacher any message or request that you receive that bothers you or that suggests personal contact with you
• Use their Jasper Online accounts and all other software provided for them only for the purposes for which they were authorized
• Respect all copyrights and licenses associated with Jasper Online School
• Not attempt to interfere with the normal operation of a shared system
• Not attempt to circumvent the restrictions associated with their online accounts
• Not send obscene, vulgar or harassing messages

Attendance

• Definition of what is meant by “regular attendance:”
  
• Students and teachers are expected to login regularly to their course. Specific requirements and definition of what is meant by “regular” attendance:

1. Regular attendance requires that students log in at least once every week.
2. Attempt at least one assignment every week.
3. Participate in a forum or write in a blog at least once every month.
4. Submit an assignment or deliver a presentation or write a test at least once every 2 weeks.

• Attendance on a regular basis is not only central to the overall mission of Jasper Online School, but is crucial to the success of our students. Jasper Online School has the attendance policy found below to promote the regular attendance of students.
• The principal is responsible for maintaining student and teacher login records.
• Students who wish to withdraw from a course must submit a written request.
• Students who do not complete a course with 1 calendar will be withdrawn from courses.
• All effort will be made to make the course material as well as methods of interaction and manner of login are easily accessible. Course Participation is a combined behavior of logging in to the course on a regular basis, reviewing instructions, participating in discussion forum, and submitting assignments to be graded either by the system, such as automatically graded quizzes and tests, or by the teacher, such as practice, journals, discussions, and unit tests. Communication with the teacher and seeking support from the teacher is also an essential part of Course Participation.
• Attendance on a regular basis is not only central in the overall mission of Jasper Academy, but is crucial to the success of our students All students are expected to attend classes regularly and complete all assignments and homework in due time and submit to the teacher. Absenteeism and lateness reduce the chances of a fair performance and evaluation dramatically. Students with legitimate reasons for absence must submit appropriate documentation to support their claim. Legitimate documentation may include, but is not limited to, a doctor’s note. The principal will determine the legitimate of a student’s reason and documentation.
• Note: for students who are under the age of majority, Jasper Academy reports all absences to:

1. The student’s parents or guardian and
2. To the appropriate government agencies where and when applicable.

• Specific Procedures for addressing Absenteeism

1. Students are expected to attend all classes and be punctual. 
2. In case a student misses a class requirement; the student will be expected to complete any and all missed assignments/tasks etc. Teachers and the student will consult about how to access the skills and knowledge that have been missed by the student.
3. Students who miss extended class time or who lack class participation will be issued a warning (“A Gentle Reminder”) that they are in jeopardy of losing their credit-earning status in the class.
4. After a student has failed to login to the class and or fail other measures of determining absenteeism, the student (and the parent/guardian, if required) will be required to attend a meeting with the principal and the teacher to assess their ability to continue in the course, during this meeting the onus will be on the student (and the parent/guardian) to assure the principal and the teacher that the absenteeism will cease. The student will only be allowed to continue if the student successfully establishes his/her right to continue in the course by providing legitimate grounds for being absent. However, if the student fails to rectify the absenteeism/non participation, he/she will be asked to withdraw from the course and will not earn a credit.
5. After a student has been removed from a course, the hours that he/she spent in the class cannot be counted towards earning a credit in the course at a subsequent time of enrollment in the same course.
6. If warranted, students may have an opportunity to make up hours and missed tasks/assignments at the discretion of the Principal.

• Policies on missing for tests, Exams, or Assignments

1. Attendance and punctuality are paramount with regards to tests and examinations as is the prompt meeting of assignment deadlines. Lateness or absences for tests, and late or missing assignments can adversely affect the student’s assessments and evaluations.  All tests/exams will begin on time.  At the teacher’s discretion, students may be permitted to write a different version of the missed test/exam.
2. Students with legitimate reasons for a missed test, exam, or being late or having missed an assignment, must submit appropriate documentation to support their claim. Legitimate reasons and documentation may include, but are not limited to, illness and a doctor’s note. The principal shall determine if a student’s reason and documentation for missing a test, exam, or submitting late or missing assignments are legitimate.

Community Involvement

All students must complete 40 hours of community involvement to graduate with a diploma
Think of volunteering as an opportunity to learn more about yourself, possible career opportunities and a way to help others and give back to the community

Why you should not plagiarize

• It is the most serious academic offense
• In university, you will get a 0% for the test or assignment, which will likely cause you to fail the course without a refund and it will show on your academic record
• Depending on what you plagiarize, you can get suspended and even expelled instantly
• If this goes on your record in post-secondary education (college or university) it could prevent you from ever going to University again
• Most universities require you to submit essays and assignments on a website called turnitin. com, and this website will detect right away if your work has been copied from elsewhere.
• It’s better to fail then to plagiarize; if you feel you won`t pass a test or assignment, go see your teacher, they will be happy to help you! :)
